On Friday June 29th, Shindig resident 7″ 45 selectors, General Eclectic, Parkdale Funk and Splattermonkey will be playing a sweet mix of Surf Rock, Garage, Soul, R&B, Ska, Calypso and Reggae music from the 50s and 60s all night! The perfect mix to kick off our first party of the Summer!

…’cause the Babalao party don’t stop!

Toronto’s Babalao Stereo Club are quickly making a serious name for themselves in the city’s Latin‐Funk music scene with their high‐energy grooves and sultry sound. Thursday, September 15th marks the debut of their long‐awaited first full‐length CD, The Latin Bang Theory, at Toronto’s historic Gladstone Hotel. Special guests for the evening will include Toronto’s percussion posse Samba Squad, award‐winning Venezuelan guitarist Pinguino and DJ Double K from Parkdale Funk.

Formed in 2006, Babalao Stereo Club is an impressive Latin‐Funk group consisting of five highly skilled and extremely talented musicians – Samba Squad co‐director and front man, percussionist David Figliano, guitarist Manuel Rivas, bassist Jamie Sanchez, pianist Adam Silver and drummer Luis Bertolotti. Citing influences that include Los Amigos Invisibles, Carlos Santana and Los Tetas, this innovative five piece band blends spicy Latin elements such as Salsa, Merengue and Mambo with North American Funk, House, Afrobeat and contemporary dance rhythms.

Babalao Stereo Club enjoyed a successful EP release in 2008 as well as a series of high‐profile gigs such as opening for Femi Abosede and Grammy Award winning Latin sensation Alex Cuba. They have also been featured on various popular radio programs including CIUT’s Dos Mundos with Sergio Elmir, Jason Palma’s Higher Ground and BBC Radio’s The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show.

My good mate Mogpaws of Simmer Down fame moved back to Toronto recently from a little stint in Brazil. He ended up moving literally around the corner from me, so we decided to get together one rainy Sunday afternoon and have a meeting of the minds. Parkdale Funk is very proud to present volume 3 in my Toronto Funk series. This new addition to the podcast features a mix by the mighty Splattermonkey! I have had the pleasure to DJ along side Splattermonkey and he’s one hell of an amazing DJ, an wicked selector, a great appreciator of 45s and one hell of a nice guy. I’m very happy to host a mix from a Toronto local who is not just a fellow DJ and collector but someone who I also call a friend. I used to be a bit of a lazy digger when it came to collecting old funk and soul music. Buying compilations seemed like an easy way to find those old funk tunes that I wanted to have in my collection. When I first started listening to the Parkdale Funk Show, back in early 2008, I felt inspired to start collecting 45′s. Double K would compile a lot of amazing tunes that I’ve heard on compilations but somehow, they sounded better on 45. So, with the help and inspiration from other collectors around the city, like General Eclectic, DJ Standfast and of course Double K, I slowly started to build up my funky 45 arsenal. When The Parkdale Funk Show started the “Toronto Funk Series”, I thought to myself, “I’d love to record a mix for this series but I have to record it using 45′s.” So, I waited until I had the right mix of funky 45′s to record for the series. Unfortunately, I sort of failed at my attempt because the third and second to last songs came from a 12″ album and a 12″ Ghana funk compilation but I’m still proud of this mix because it’s full of party tunes that have been getting the dance floors moving at my weekly basement soul party, Pass The Butter at Andy Poolhall located at 489 College Street in Toronto! This ain’t no regular party, this is a Super Party!

It’s been some time since I posted one of my own proper 45 mixes, so I got down to business over the weekend and came up with the Big City Lights Mix. As usual I’m all over the place and I start out with some slower sublime soul 45s and move into some faster tempo funk 45s while throwing in some classic Northern Soul spins as well. Some of these 45s are a bit on the scratchy side, so please excuse the hiss on this mix. I hope you enjoy it – there are some big hitters here!

Circle Research are producers, remixers, turntablists and radio hosts. Well-known for their 10 years on CKLN radio, they’re now broadcasting online with the best podcast the interweb has to offer, The Circle Research Show. Nik & Gil have also just recently released their 3rd album, Gardiner Express on the Urbnet label. I’m a little intimidated to be sharing the decks with these two heavy weights to say the least.

The Parkdale Funk Show is finally back online after some technical difficulties and equipment malfunctions.  I have upgrading some of my equipment and from now on the podcasts are going to be sounding proper! Thanks for your patience.

Lets roll spring in with some proper funk 45s! I’m a bit all over the place with this mix but that’s how I like it. There are two tunes I want to give a shout out to. One is the Original Black Sheep of The Family 45 from the Cultures Of Soul. This young label pulled the original master tapes from the original band members and let this great 1978 banger finally get to see the light of day. It’s the first release on Cultures Of Soul and hopefully we’ll see more coming out of their camp – What a tune! Secondly, the Billy Love tune on FNR records is a pure funk bomb! It’s also the first release on Funk Night Records out of Detroit and what a job they did on the JB styled winner. I love seeing “new funk” done properly! I hope to hear more music coming out of these two indie labels.

So dust off your dancing shoes and give your neck a stretch for a solid  hour of soul & funk 45 gems.
