“FUNKY PEASOUP” MIXED BY CHRIS ALLWAYSDIGGIN

Monday, October 26th, 2009

icon for podpress  Funkypea Soup mixed by Chris Alwaysdiggin [49:25m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (915)

The Parkdale Funk Show is proud to present the Funkypea Soup Mix by Chris Allwaysdiggin’! It’s a very hardy and tasty mix that I’m sure everyone will enjoy. Chris is out of London UK and is a hands on digger with dusty fingertips. Pull out your can opener and bust out some funky pea soup!

Here are a few words from Chris Allwaysdiggin’…

“Big up to Double K first and foremost for featuring “THE FUNKYPEA SOUP” mix on Parkdale Funk.

The Ingredients: A selection of 45s, some old, some new, funk and then some. Kicking off with some funky vegetables from The Vibrations, a recession fueled funky tale of a Harlem food shortage. Then to the O.G. Lyrics of John McCain every ounce the old skool. “PIMP” by the Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, which is the source for the 50 Cent track.

Add spice with some reggae/rocksteady tunes from Tommy McCook, Bill Campbell and a reggae/funk crossover from Buster Pearson’s killer instro.

Add a dash of momma’s gravy “Yum-Yum” followed by the southern funk of Benny Gordon. At this point we ask, is it funky enough? Or do you want some more? There’s some sister funk from Pamela Cole and the Jive Turkeys with B.A.

From the hip-hop chef Pete Rock, who immortalized the horn (the creator) from King Curtis’ “Instant Groove”

Add four more funk 45s by Freddy King, Mr. Percolator, The Soul Avengers, and the Mighty Groove Makers. There’s also a fine cover of the Boogaloo Joe Jones cut “Brown Bag”, done with a guitar that’s every bit as quick and tight as the original!

Hope you enjoy the taste and thanx for listening!

Peace

Chris Allwaysdiggin”

Enjoy the Funk

“CONNECTING FLIGHT” MIXED BY DJ JUN

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

icon for podpress  Connecting Flights - Mixed by DJ Jun [49:06m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (661)

The Parkdale Funk Show has something very special, an amazing guest mix by DJ Jun of Cr8apes. This t.dot DJ is going to take you on a musical flight all over the globe with this mix. I am quite proud to be hosting such an amazing set!

As most of you know, Parkdale Funk is based out of Toronto Canada. I absolutely love this city (especially now that the garbage strike is over!) and all the talent that it holds. Over the upcoming months you’re going to see special guest mixes from t.dot DJs in a new series called Toronto Funk. DJ Jun is starting up this series so make sure to show some love and visit his mighty Cr8apes site.

www.cr8apes.com
www.djjun.com

Here are a few words from Jun:

“Ok, so looking over that last bunch of mixes I’ve made, I realize that I’ve been concentrating on a lot of genre-based mixes and not the cross-genre, mash’em up style that I’ve been know to play out. So, to be true to my character (not that I wasn’t being true before ;) ), I’ve put a mix together that breaks down the genre barrier and connects music from, in this case, 8 countries from 4 different continents. ‘Connecting Flight’ mixes together funk, salsa, bossa funk, brazilian & ska tunes from countries such as Germany, Panama, Nigeria and St. Lucia in a way that, hopefully, you don’t even realize that you’ve just travelled through 4 continents in just under 50 minutes.

I hope you have as much fun listening to it as I had making it.

A Big, BIG shout out to DJ Double K of Parkdale Funk who has kindly offered to post the ‘Connecting Flight’ mix as Part 1 of his ‘Toronto Funk Series’ and to give me the opportunity to share some music with his readers.”

“SEARCHING” MIXED BY DJ PRESTIGE

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

icon for podpress  Searching Mixed By DJ Prestige [34:28m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | Download (1143)

It’s been a few months since my last podcast but I’m finally back from hiatus with a slamming new show! I hope everyone had a chance to check out the new redesigned website and subscribed to the podcast. The podcast feed has moved, so to my old listeners please resubscribe to the show.

For the site unveiling I wanted to come back with a bang, so I have a very special mix lined up. DJ Prestige from Flea Market Funk accepted my offer to open up the new website with a guest mix! Prestige hails from Asbury Park New Jersey, he’s a crate digger, cereal fanatic, single speed road bike builder, beard cultivator and all around beat junkie. It’s always a pleasure for me to have someone on the show that I am a big fan of. I hope you enjoy this episode and keep coming back.

Here are a few words from DJ Prestige…

Hello Parkdale Funk people!  When Double K asked me to do a mix for the new and improved Parkdale Funk, I jumped at the chance.  I’ve put together a little mix here that at times really deviates from Flea Market Funk a bit, but the core of the word funky, remains.  Starting off with a lesser known funky instrumental from a well known musician (I’m sure somebody knows who it is), I jump into an artist I reviewed on FMF a while ago, Billy Strange with a funky little rock number “Put A Little Led in Your Zeppelin”.  This is definitely influenced by Led Zeppelin.  The next track up is a woman who has definitely done her share of funky covers, this time a Blood, Sweat and Tears tune.  Shirley Bassey tears up “Spinning Wheel”.  There is a great DJ Spinna Remix of this with monster drums I suggest you seek out.  Next up we have Hannibal, with “Wake Up”.   Screaming guitars and a killer horn section, plus the Mighty One preaching on the track make this a keeper.  I wanted to throw in some Albert King, but didn’t want to put the usual, known King sides.  “Oh, Pretty Woman” is no Roy Orbison or Van Halen cover of the original, rather a great Blues Funk side with a good hook and drum break.  Moving on to another guy I’ve reviewed, and the guitar Jazz Funk of Freddy Robinson. He gives us a great side in “Black Fox”.  The next record is a local record from Monmouth County, New Jersey.  The Soul Set feat. Norman Seldin do “Filet Au Soul”.  The band was a Garage/ Soul Band from my area in the 60’s that I had to put on here.  I don’t turn up much of these records.  I know Larry at Funky 16 Corners has though.  I was excited to feature a NJ artist on here, especially of the Soul variety.  Here’s where I change it up a bit, and go a little Latin on you.  Ray Baretto’s “Hard Hands” was hanging on the wall at Asbury Lanes collecting dust until I grabbed it, and The Los Angeles Negroes, while not traditionally funky, have a really eerie hook in  “Sombras de Tu Recuerdo”.  The next side I scooped up from NJ flea market legend King Bravo, the king of Reggae and Calypso records.  Carl Malcolm croons some sweet Roots music in “Black Colour, Proud Mind”.  Next up, Nina Simone, is an artist I admire greatly.  Her struggle throughout her whole life is an amazing story, and until I dug up this record, I never knew she recorded for CTI.  “Baltimore” is a sweet but sad side that weaves the tale of the seedy side of that historical city.  I was introduced to this next record by the one and only Devil Dick, however it was the flip side (”40 Acres and a Mule”).  I cut in a Big Daddy Kane sample in “Blow Your Mind”, and as BDK says, it’s some pimp shit.  I wanted to end the mix on a mellow note (as I often do with my mixes), and give props to a modern Funk and Soul label, Truth and Soul, and The Expressions with “These Moments”.  I hope you guys enjoy this mix, and I thank Double K for giving me the opportunity to share some music with his readers.

Always keep diggin’, and remember to support your local Funk and Soul DJ.
